DMCC and IFZA are two of the most popular free zones in Dubai, and they come up in the same conversation constantly. Here's how they compare with each other. For a broader comparison across all UAE free zones, see our free zone comparison guide.
The Cost Difference Between DMCC and IFZA
We'll start with getting the numbers out of the way. (Remember that this information may be outdated and it's best to ask a Corpwise consultant for the latest numbers).
IFZA first-year cost (1 visa):
- Licence package (1 visa): AED 14,900
- Establishment card: AED 2,000 to AED 2,500
- Visa processing (medical, Emirates ID, stamping): AED 3,800 to AED 4,800
- All-in first year: AED 20,000 to AED 22,000
DMCC first-year cost (1 visa):
- Licence fee: AED 15,000 to AED 25,000 depending on activity type
- Company registration: AED 3,000 to AED 5,000 (one-time)
- Flexi-desk or registered office: AED 10,000 to AED 15,000 per year
- Establishment card: AED 2,000 to AED 3,000
- Visa processing: AED 4,000 to AED 6,000
- All-in first year: AED 35,000 to AED 55,000
The gap is AED 15,000 to AED 30,000 in year one. For a solo founder or a small service business, that difference is real capital you could deploy elsewhere. For a trading company doing AED 500,000+ in monthly volume, it's a rounding error.
Year two renewal tells a similar story. IFZA renewal runs approximately AED 12,000 to AED 16,000. DMCC renewal runs AED 20,000 to AED 35,000. The cost difference persists every year, not just at setup.
Location and Address
DMCC is based in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), one of Dubai's most established commercial districts. JLT is central, well-connected to the Metro, and surrounded by restaurants, hotels, and coworking spaces. A DMCC address is immediately recognisable to banks, clients, and partners. Over 25,000 companies are registered there.
IFZA is located at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), on the eastern edge of Dubai along the Al Ain Road. The address is legitimate and Dubai-based, but DSO is 25 to 35 minutes from Downtown and 40+ minutes from Marina or JBR. IFZA was originally established under the Fujairah Free Zone Authority before relocating to Dubai.
Why this matters: For most service businesses, e-commerce operators, and consultancies, the physical address is on an invoice and a website — clients rarely visit. The location difference is irrelevant. For businesses where client-facing meetings, physical networking, or walk-in credibility matter, DMCC's JLT address carries more weight.
Banking and Credibility
DMCC has a long-established reputation with UAE banks. Compliance teams at major banks are familiar with DMCC documentation, and the zone's regulatory framework is well-understood. This doesn't guarantee approval — your documents and business activity still matter — but DMCC companies generally experience less friction during the bank account opening process.
IFZA is newer and, because of its Fujairah-origin regulatory history, some bank compliance teams categorise it differently. IFZA companies can and do open bank accounts successfully, but the process can take longer or require more explanation.
If you're in a business activity that already faces banking scrutiny (consulting with vague descriptions, trading in sensitive goods, crypto-adjacent activities), starting with DMCC can reduce one layer of friction. If your activity is straightforward and your documents are clean, IFZA companies open accounts without issues.

Business Activities
DMCC supports a wide range of activities — trading, commodities, professional services, technology, crypto (through the DMCC Crypto Centre), manufacturing, and more. DMCC was originally built for commodity trading and still has the strongest infrastructure for businesses that trade physical goods internationally. The DMCC Tradeflow platform provides electronic commodity trade documentation, and the zone has direct connections to diamond, gold, and tea trading platforms.
If you're in commodities, precious metals, or crypto, DMCC has specific infrastructure that no other free zone in the UAE replicates.
IFZA supports over 1,500 approved activities across services, trading, consulting, IT, e-commerce, media, and education. The activity list is broad and flexible — you can add up to 3 activities under a single licence and switch or add activities without starting over.
For general service businesses, e-commerce, IT, consulting, and non-commodity trading, both zones cover your needs. The activity list difference only matters for specialised sectors like commodities, crypto, and manufacturing where DMCC has purpose-built infrastructure.
Visa Allocation
IFZA is more generous on visas relative to workspace cost. A flexi-desk supports up to 3 visas, and packages scale to 6 visas without requiring a dedicated office. IFZA has also run a "Visa for Life" promotion that waives visa renewal fees for qualifying licence holders.
DMCC ties visa quotas more strictly to office size. A virtual office typically supports 1 visa. A flexi-desk supports 2. To get 3+ visas, you generally need to upgrade to a serviced or dedicated office, which significantly increases cost. For businesses planning to hire even a small team, this escalation hits faster at DMCC than at IFZA.
Setup Speed
IFZA is faster. The process is almost entirely digital — licence issuance in 3 to 5 business days from clean document submission. IFZA was built as a digital-first zone and the onboarding process reflects that.
DMCC is slightly slower — 5 to 10 business days for the licence, plus potentially longer for compliance review given the zone's more stringent internal vetting. This isn't a dealbreaker, but if speed is critical (closing a deal that requires a UAE entity, meeting a contract deadline), IFZA has an edge.
When DMCC Is the Right Choice
- Commodity trading, precious metals, or gold: DMCC was built for this. The Tradeflow platform, the Diamond Exchange, and the tea and coffee centres have no equivalent elsewhere.
- Crypto and virtual assets: The DMCC Crypto Centre offers a recognised framework for crypto-adjacent businesses.
- Businesses where banking credibility is critical: If your business model involves high transaction volumes, international wire transfers, or complex payment flows, DMCC's established bank relationships reduce friction.
- Client-facing businesses in central Dubai: If your clients visit your office, attend meetings, or judge your business by your address, JLT carries weight.
- Companies planning to scale to 10+ employees: If you're budgeting for rapid growth, DMCC's physical office infrastructure and larger visa quotas (tied to office size) support scaling better.
When IFZA Is the Right Choice
- Solo founders, freelancers, and small teams (1–3 people): IFZA's cost structure is designed for lean operations. You get a Dubai entity at roughly half the cost of DMCC.
- Service businesses with international clients: Consulting, IT, marketing, design, education — activities where the client never visits your office and the address is just a line on an invoice.
- E-commerce businesses: You need a licence to sell online, not a JLT tower. IFZA gives you that at a lower price point.
- Budget-conscious first setup: If you're testing the UAE market and want to minimise upfront commitment, IFZA lets you start and validate before investing in a premium zone.
- Businesses that need more visas on less office space: IFZA's flexi-desk supports more visa allocations per dirham than DMCC.
What About Other Zones?
If neither DMCC nor IFZA feels right, here are the alternatives and when they make more sense:
SHAMS (Sharjah): Even cheaper than IFZA (from AED 5,750 licence only). Best for solo freelancers who want the absolute lowest cost. Trade-off: Sharjah address, not Dubai.
Ajman Free Zone: Similar pricing to SHAMS with warehouse and port access. Best for trading companies that need physical infrastructure at a low price.
Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSOA): Mid-range pricing, tech park ecosystem, live-work community. Best for tech startups that want incubator access and physical office space in Dubai.
DIFC: Premium financial zone. AED 50,000+ first year. Best for regulated financial services, fund management, and fintech with institutional clients. Different league entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is DMCC better than IFZA?
It depends on what your business needs. DMCC is better for commodity trading, crypto, businesses needing strong bank credibility, and client-facing operations in central Dubai. IFZA is better for service businesses, e-commerce, solo founders, and anyone prioritising cost efficiency. There's no universally "better" zone — only the one that fits your activity, budget, and growth plan.
Is IFZA a Dubai free zone?
Yes. IFZA is physically located at Dubai Silicon Oasis and your trade licence shows a Dubai address. However, IFZA was originally established under the Fujairah Free Zone Authority. This regulatory origin occasionally affects how some banks classify IFZA companies, though it has no impact on the licence's legal validity.
Can I switch from IFZA to DMCC later?
Not directly. Switching free zones means closing your IFZA company and registering a new entity at DMCC. You'd need to deregister, re-register, transfer contracts, and process new visas. It's manageable but involves cost and administrative effort. If you're fairly confident you'll want a DMCC presence within 12 months, it may be more cost-effective to start there despite the higher initial price.
Which zone is easier for opening a bank account?
DMCC generally has smoother bank relationships due to its long-established reputation. But the zone name is only one factor — your business activity, ownership structure, source of funds documentation, and business plan matter more. Well-prepared IFZA applications get approved; poorly-prepared DMCC applications get rejected. The file quality matters more than the zone name.
How many visas can I get at IFZA vs DMCC?
IFZA offers up to 3 visas on a flexi-desk and up to 6 or 7 on higher-tier packages. DMCC offers 1 visa on a virtual office and 2 on a flexi-desk, with more available as you upgrade to dedicated offices. For businesses needing 3+ visas without the cost of a private office, IFZA is significantly more flexible.
Do both zones support general trading licences?
Yes. Both DMCC and IFZA issue general trading licences that allow importing, exporting, and dealing in multiple product categories. DMCC has an edge for commodity-specific trading (gold, diamonds, coffee, tea) due to its specialist platforms and trading infrastructure. For general goods trading, either zone works.
