Meydan Free Zone sits in an interesting spot. It gives you a Dubai address at a price point closer to Sharjah zones, which makes it one of the more compelling options for founders who want Dubai positioning without paying DMCC or DIFC prices.

Named after the Meydan horse racing district in central Dubai, the zone benefits from a location that's closer to Downtown and Business Bay than most competing free zones. It's not as well-known as DMCC or as heavily marketed as IFZA, which means fewer founders consider it — but for certain business types, it's a better fit than both.

What Meydan Free Zone Costs

Meydan uses a modular pricing structure. The licence is the base layer; visas, workspace, and additional activities stack on top.

  • Licence (zero visas): AED 12,500. Includes the trade licence, a virtual office address, and up to three business activity groups under one licence. No visa allocation.
  • Licence + 1 visa allocation: AED 14,350. Same as above plus one residence visa slot.
  • Licence + 6 visa allocations: AED 23,600. Maximum visa capacity under a single licence.

Per-visa processing cost: AED 3,500 for an employment visa, approximately AED 4,000 for an investor/partner visa, and approximately AED 6,000 for a dependent visa. These cover entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, and stamping.

Additional visa allocation: AED 1,850 per slot if you want to add capacity later without upgrading to a full new package.

Realistic first-year totals:

  • Licence only (no visa): AED 12,500
  • Licence + 1 investor visa processed: AED 18,000 to AED 20,000
  • Licence + 3 visas processed: AED 28,000 to AED 34,000
  • Licence + 6 visas processed: AED 44,000 to AED 52,000

Year-two renewal: AED 12,500 for the licence. Visa renewals are additional. Meydan does not currently require audited financial statements at renewal — a point worth noting if you're comparing against IFZA, which does.

These numbers put Meydan in the same bracket as IFZA (AED 20,000–22,000 first year with 1 visa) and ahead of SHAMS (AED 14,000–18,000) and Ajman (AED 14,000–18,000). The cost advantage over IFZA shows up at higher visa counts — Meydan's AED 1,850 per additional visa slot is notably cheaper than IFZA's scaling.

Meydan Business Activities and Licence Structure

Meydan offers two licence tracks:

Standard licence (AED 12,500): Access to 2,500+ business activities across trading, services, consulting, e-commerce, technology, media, education, and more. Up to three activity groups included at no extra charge. You can combine trading and consulting activities under one licence — something several zones charge extra for.

Fawri licence (AED 15,000): A streamlined product designed for solo founders. Covers 1,800+ activities and is designed for licence issuance in under 60 minutes. The Fawri licence is aimed at single-person setups that want speed over flexibility.

For most businesses, the standard licence is the right choice. The Fawri option is worth considering only if you need the licence issued the same day and don't need the full 2,500-activity list.

Meydan Location Advantage

Meydan's physical location is its advantage. The Meydan district sits in Nad Al Sheba — close to Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, and Dubai International Airport. It's more central than DSO (where IFZA is based), more accessible than Jebel Ali, and in a recognisably Dubai address.

For businesses where client meetings happen in central Dubai, Meydan's location means less commuting than DSO or any Northern Emirates zone. For businesses that operate entirely remotely, the location is irrelevant — but the address still reads as Dubai on your licence, invoices, and website.

Meydan Business Setup Speed

Meydan is fast. The standard licence process takes 3 to 5 business days from clean document submission. The Fawri licence product claims sub-60-minute issuance for pre-approved applications — if true, that's the fastest licence issuance of any UAE free zone.

Visa processing follows the standard timeline regardless of zone: 2 to 4 weeks for medical, Emirates ID, and stamping.

Total from application to visa in hand: 3 to 5 weeks. Licence only: as fast as same day (Fawri) or 3 to 5 days (standard).

What Meydan Does Well

Dubai address at budget pricing. AED 12,500 for a Dubai free zone licence with three activities included is competitive. You get the Dubai label without the DMCC or DIFC price premium.

Scalable visa model. The AED 1,850 per additional visa slot means you can start with one visa and add more as you hire, without upgrading your entire package. This pay-as-you-grow structure is especially practical for businesses with uncertain hiring timelines.

Central location. Closer to Downtown and Business Bay than DSO, IFZA, or any Northern Emirates zone. Matters for client-facing businesses and founders who want to live in central Dubai.

No audit at renewal. Unlike IFZA, Meydan does not currently require audited financial statements at annual renewal. Your compliance overhead is simpler and cheaper — renew the licence, pay the fee, done.

Three activities included. Same as IFZA, but with a broader list (2,500 vs 1,500). You can combine trading and consulting under one licence without extra charges.

Where Meydan Falls Short

Banking perception. This is Meydan's most commonly cited limitation. Some banks — particularly the top-tier international ones — have historically been less familiar with Meydan documentation compared to DMCC or even IFZA. Digital banks (Wio, Mashreq Neo) and mid-tier banks (RAKBank) tend to be more receptive. This is improving as Meydan's company count grows, but if banking is your top concern, DMCC remains the path of least resistance.

Brand recognition. Meydan is growing but still less recognised than DMCC, DIFC, or IFZA among international businesses and investors. If your clients or partners evaluate you partly based on which free zone you're in — common in institutional finance, luxury sectors, and corporate procurement — Meydan may not carry enough weight yet.

Limited physical infrastructure. Meydan offers a virtual office address and flexi-desk, but doesn't have the coworking campus of DSO (DTEC), the warehouse facilities of Ajman, or the commercial real estate inventory of DMCC in JLT. If you need a dedicated physical office, you'll arrange that independently.

Narrower ecosystem. DMCC has 25,000+ member companies, a commodity trading platform, and a crypto centre. IFZA has built strong agent and consultant networks. Meydan's community is smaller, meaning fewer built-in networking and partnership opportunities within the zone.

Who Meydan Is Best For

  • Solo founders and small teams who want a Dubai address without the AED 35,000+ cost of DMCC
  • Businesses with uncertain growth plans that benefit from the pay-as-you-grow visa model
  • Client-facing businesses based in central Dubai where commuting to DSO or a Northern Emirates zone would be impractical
  • Founders comparing IFZA and wanting simpler renewals — Meydan's no-audit renewal process saves AED 3,000–6,000 annually
  • E-commerce and online service businesses that need a legitimate Dubai licence at a competitive price

Meydan is not the best choice if you need the strongest possible banking credibility (DMCC wins), the cheapest possible licence regardless of location (SHAMS and Ajman win), or physical office and warehouse infrastructure (DSO or Ajman win).

Meydan vs the Alternatives

IFZA: Similar pricing, also Dubai-based (DSO). IFZA has broader brand recognition among setup consultants but requires audited financials at renewal. Meydan is more centrally located and has simpler renewals. Full IFZA guide.

SHAMS: AED 4,000–6,000 cheaper per year but Sharjah address, not Dubai. More visas on a basic package (6 vs Meydan's starting 1). Choose SHAMS if cost is the overriding priority and you don't need the Dubai label. Full SHAMS guide.

DMCC: AED 15,000–30,000 more per year. JLT address with top-tier banking and brand credibility. Commodity and crypto infrastructure. Choose DMCC if banking, brand, or commodities matter.

DSO: Similar pricing but includes tech park infrastructure, DTEC incubator, and residential community. Choose DSO if you're in tech and want a physical ecosystem. Full DSO guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Meydan Free Zone cost in 2026?

The base licence starts at AED 12,500 (zero visas, three activities included). A realistic all-in first year with one investor visa processed is AED 18,000 to AED 20,000. With six visas, expect AED 44,000 to AED 52,000. Renewal in year two is AED 12,500 for the licence, with no audit or financial statement requirement.

Is Meydan better than IFZA?

They're very close. Meydan offers a more central Dubai location, simpler renewals (no audit required), and cheaper per-visa scaling. IFZA offers broader brand recognition, a slightly larger consultant network, and a more established track record. For most service businesses, either works — the decision often comes down to renewal simplicity (Meydan) vs market familiarity (IFZA).

Can I open a bank account with a Meydan licence?

Yes. Some founders report that top-tier banks are less familiar with Meydan documentation compared to DMCC or IFZA, but digital banks and mid-tier institutions regularly accept Meydan licence holders. A well-prepared banking file — clear business plan, source of funds, and complete KYC — matters far more than the zone name.

How fast can I set up in Meydan?

The standard licence takes 3 to 5 business days. The Fawri product is designed for same-day issuance. Visa processing adds 2 to 4 weeks on top. Total time from application to visa in hand is 3 to 5 weeks.

Does Meydan require audited accounts at renewal?

No, not currently. This is a notable advantage over IFZA, which requires audited or reviewed financial statements at renewal — adding AED 3,000 to AED 6,000 annually to the effective cost. Meydan's renewal is straightforward: pay the licence renewal fee and continue operating.
